What are the physical features of a boreal forest?
The boreal forest has a rough terrain that is covered by a wet soil and contains many marshes and lakes. With a short growing season of fifty days and the harsh weather conditions, special adaptations of animals and plants must be made.

Plants, animals, and adaptaion
The boreal forest mainly consists of coniferous trees such as black spruce. The coniferous trees have needles instead of leaves which protect them from water loss and allow the snow to glide off easily. On the ground there are just few plants that can grow with the little sunlight that reaches through the needles of the trees.

Most of the birds fly south during winter. Small mammals burrow in the winter to stay warm. Mammals such as moose have thick insulating skin and fur and tend to be large. The large body enables the moose to retain their body heat. Like some Arctic animals, hares or foxes can change their fur colour to white during winter. The wet environment gives perfect living conditions to insects.
